Ok so i live in Cheyenne, WY and my wife and i have moved into a house that is devided into two different rental units. the electrical is out dated and the landlord had an electrision out to look at it. what all was said is that it needed to be up dated due to both the apartments are ran on on breaker each and that none of the outlets have a ground. that was about two months ago. we have an 11 month old son ans we are concerned about his safety as well as ours. we pay $750 a month and $100 is for the utilitys we also have the option to pay our own utilitys but the house is only on one meter box and the landlord wanted us to pay for everything like gas (which is one one meter as well) electric, sewer, and trash. they are getting ready to rent the basement out and are almost done with the remodle. and if we choose to pay the utilitys we would have to pay the basements aswell cause the landlord is not updating anything about the utilitys due to cost... what should we do? and if possible what are the option of breaking the lease???

Is the electrical safe? Codes change frequently and older properties are sometimes "grandfathered" in and may not be required to meet current code requirements unless new permits are pulled for allowed upgrades and/or alterations to the property. It is important for you to find out if the "remodeling" is permitted and whether the current electrical system is safe or not. Also, you could try checking with the local codes department to find out if landlords are required to have separate meters for multiple unit rental properties. You could just call and ask a general question. Another source if information would be the local utility companies. They may be able to let you know whether multi-unit rental properties require individual utility meters for multi-unit properties. If you have not already reviewed the landlord tenant laws for the state/county/city where the rental property is located to see if shared utilities are mentioned, you should check that as well.
Let us know what you find out...
